how many days without water ?

seeing some of these Haitian survivors being pulled out of the rubble
after 5-6 days without water kind of screws the second line of The Rule of 3

3 minutes without air
3 days without water
3 weeks without food

so why/how did these people survive 5-6 days without water ?

inactivity ?

warm climate ?

The rule of 3 is a general rule. Not entirely accurate 100% of the time.

Some people can hold their breath for longer than 3 minutes. People can also survive without oxygen for much longer periods given various conditions (such as extreme cold).

People have also routinely fasted for much longer than 21 days and to answer your question, yes, it is very possible to survive longer than 3 days without water.

I've not eaten for 32 days before. Know peple that have lived for 48 days on water too.

Yogis have repeatedly demonstrated the ability to continue to live at extremely reduced levels of oxygen, food and water. They have been able to enter the breathless state, almost suspended animation, where they need not take a breath for hours. For normal folks, that seems extreme, but with very little practice one can learn to enter a state with greatly reduced requirements.

The secret is the breathing. Through breath regulation you can control autonomic nervous system functions all the way to cellular metabolism. By slowing down the breath you can decrease heart rate and rate of respiration. Lots of water is lost as water vapor in the breath. Nose breathing conserves both heat and moisture.

Depends on the climate - possibly buried in the rubble kept them cool (less moisture loss via sweat), and activity - one can assume they were immobile and possibly unconscious which would also decrease the water loss.

I think it likely that those folks have permanent organ damage

I've gone six days without water... wintertime.... cold weather, wasn't very active. Oh yea: wasn't eating either.

Definitely was not pumping iron or digging ditches, but was fine at low level activity.

Those "limits" are "guidelines" not hard and fast rules.... just like having a pulse of 72/minute is JUST AVERAGE, not absolute fact.

Don't believe everything you read or hear. :36_1_30:

If you run a marathon through death valley in 110F temperature, you may die in 3 hours.

If you lay in a shaded space beneath rubble without any exertion you might make it a week or more.

Big factor!

Spiritual and mental disposition greatly affects "things."

If any of those people get to be interviewed

I will wager my entire Silver stash( Three Mercury Dimes)

The will talk about Family or Faith that kept them fighting to stay alive.

I learned the hard way this past year. My Mom, in her 80's, had a stroke and could not swallow, she was conscious (off and on) even talking some for about 7 days, lasted nine days. No IV, no food, no water, nine days! She insisted no feeding tube.

For those who can, tell your Mom you love her.

in an active survival situation i think the 3 day rule is accurate.

if you were immobolized, or drinking your own urine, you would certainly last longer.

but in a full day of activity in which you would do normal survival tasks? not that long. I remember an episode of survivorman in the desert. He went 48 hours with no water and started getting massive migranes and nausia, he had to call it quits, as he was concerned he would pass out.

I think Moses did forty days without food or water they went and did forty more days without food or water.

Dew Ponds= pile loose rock rubble, warm moisture laden air flows in, cools against the colder inside rock, water drops condense against the colder rocks, water drips down to a prepared pond

Same effect happens against the sides of your cool drink glass on a warm day
